Barbie - Review

Writer's picture: SkylarSkylar

At some point (I trace it to around 2016) popular movies and popular music stopped being fun. Optimism descended out of fashion, and was replaced by a bleaker realisation of the systemic problems that exist in our world. I believe this to part of the reason why Barbie became such a cultural force. It’s a movie that genuinely promises a brighter future for all, and aren’t those just so rare nowadays? Barbie represents hope, an escape from the patriarchal ideals that have held us back for so long. It feels like the shackles are finally off and the message is out there and the only way is up from here. Great performances and a killer accompany a surprisingly emotional message, but it’s the smartness of that message that will make Barbie a classic for years to come. I just hope that the future it promises is truly a possibility going forward. We can hope.
