Bottoms - Review

Writer's picture: SkylarSkylar

Honestly, I’m still trying to work out if Bottoms is the best or worst movie I’ve seen this year so far. The tonal whiplash, the excruciatingly broadly sketched satire, the open question of where the joke ends and reality begins, all of these are criticisms you could make of this film, but I don’t think I agree with them. On sheer style alone I think Bottoms pulls through. You’ve got to admire the willingness to commit so strongly to such a wacky concept. The execution might feel a bit clumsy, but I find it hard to complain when it compliments the teenage awkwardness of the movie so well. I’m a little stunned that I’m saying this, but I think I’m leaning towards ‘best’ rather than ‘worst’. Shiva Baby might have put Emma Seligman on the map, but Bottoms is the kind of film that’s going to keep her there for years to come.

I suggest you see it, but I can’t guarantee you’ll like it. All I’m saying.
